furnPerson leaving a review - concept

The HVAC industry is competitive, especially here in Ontario. If you’re in the market for a furnace repair, furnace installation, AC service, or any and all things HVAC, it’s important you do your research in finding the best company to fit your needs.

Here are five things that are important to find out before hiring an HVAC company:

  1. Are they professional contractors?
  2. Are they licensed & insured?
  3. Do they have good company reviews?
  4. Can they provide good contractor references?
  5. Do they give you a detailed quote?

1. HVAC Contractors (Hiring a Professional HVAC Company)

Always be sure to check if the company is local and has been in business for a respectable length of time (5+ years is a good bet). Local companies are integral to the community and must work hard to establish themselves and maintain a good reputation. Seeing that an HVAC company has professional branding, well-kept service vehicles, and uniforms are some ways to immediately gain a sense of trust that they are a competent and qualified team.

2. How to Check Licensing and Insurance of an HVAC Company

Gas fitters have a governing body known as the Technical Safety & Standards Authority (TSSA). They regulate companies and tradesmen, so they perform to a certain standard and follow specific codes. Each business qualified by the TSSA is issued a contractor’s license that may be listed on a company website or can otherwise be easily referenced by anyone on their contact line.

Professional HVAC companies also have to be insured and monitored by the Workplace Safety Insurance Board (WSIB). It’s always good to check that your contractor is covered by the WSIB and in good standing with them as well.

3. HVAC Company Reviews

The internet is your best friend when it comes to finding a reputable company. Google reviews and Homestars.com are better sources than the company’s website, where they are more likely and able to curate what they want you to see. Put in some leg work and find out what experiences other people have had as customers of the business.

4. How to Check Contractor References

Good companies will be happy to provide you with contractor references upon request. This is a step many people never think to take, but it is a great way to get a sense of the company’s work from people in a similar industry.

5. Have They Provided You with a Detailed Estimate?

Some companies will purposely be vague with their quotes so they can add extra charges once the work has been completed. Ensure that you receive the full scope of the work that is to be done in your home, so you aren’t left with any surprises when it’s time to pay.
